Archos 5

A few weeks ago, you probably remember when Archos announced their new line of Internet Media Tablets. A few days later, the Archos 5 was on sale at Amazon, but it wouldn’t ship until 2-4 weeks later. Finally, the wait is over, the Archos 5 has begun officially shipping from all major retailers.

The Archos 5 comes with a 4.8 inch touch screen and is Wi-Fi capable. It also comes in three different models, a 60GB, 120GB and a huge 250GB version. The 60GB costs $349.99, the 120GB costs $399.99 and the 250GB costs $449.99. If you have a big media library with a lot of videos and music you may want to get the 250GB. If you have an average media library then the 60GB and 120GB models are probably enough. It will be interesting to see how the Archos players do compared with the new 120GB Zune, and the expected new Apple gear.

Google Chrome

Walt Mossberg is the personal technology columnist for The Wall Street Journal who has been a very influential reviewer of tech products for some time.  If you release a tech product and you want it to be successful, a good review from Walt Mossberg is a big step in the right direction, while a negative review can often prove to hurt the product in the long run.

So what does Walt think of Google’s new browser, Chrome?

Mossberg generally likes the browser, especially it’s simplistic design and the fact that it gives the most screen real estate to the web page of any browser out there.  However, he does point out that it has some flaws and is missing some features that the competition has.  Some simple features such as a progress bar to see how a web page is a loading and a way to manage bookmarks are missing.  Overall though, Mossberg says that the browser is a good start for Google that is sure to shake up the browser wars.  Since it’s in beta, it’s only going to get better over time. Check out his video review below…

AT&T leak confirms HTC Touch Pro coming as the Fuze

We have seen the previous rumors and even some leaked images showing off what appears to be an AT&T branded HTC Touch Pro, of course until now those have remained nothing more than rumor. However thanks to a recently surfaced page on the AT&T website (now cached) we can confirm that AT&T will be launching the Touch Pro, and it has been dubbed the Fuze.

Otherwise the HTC Touch Pro Fuze seems like it will be just as expected and feature tri-band HSDPA, GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, VGA touch screen display and be running Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional.

Dell has gone ahead and posted a the service manual for the Mini 9, and it contains more than a few pictures of the internal guts. And judging from what we can see, the Mini 9 is going to be fun to play with, and seemingly easy to upgrade on your own.

This story is a little sketchy at best, but it seems that some of the team behind the MSI Wind may have been doing a little playing around during the process of building out the disk image. According to the details, some of the initial shipping delays that we saw with the Wind were caused by the fact that screener copies of movies along with some personal family photos found their way onto the netbooks. According to the reports the hidden files are “mostly corrupt” and need some extra effort in order to be played or viewed. Still playable or not, movies can take up a decent amount of space, anyone with an MSI Wind may want to do some digging around and check for some large files. You may be able to free up some precious hard drive space.

I almost hate to say this is an accurate date, but so far the rumored October 2 launching of AT&T’s BlackBerry Bold seems to be holding true. Of course with so many other carriers managing to get it to market it seems AT&T is just at the point of saving face here, and really cannot stand any more delays or criticism with this release.

Anyway, the latest addition to this rumor adds yet another date of September 24, however that is supposed to be when dealers can begin placing their orders. That way they are ready for consumers on October 2. This was further confirmed by a reported leaked email that cam from a “few AT&T dealers” via the “head office.”

“AT&T is pleased to announce the launch of the new Blackberry Bold. It will be available to order on September 24, 2008. ”

Unfortunately its still a few weeks away, at this point we can only hope it stands true. The one good point is that maybe we can see the Bold a bit earlier than October 2, because the dealer ordering should not take but a day or two.

With the launch of the Inspiron Mini 9, it seems Dell has decided to hold back the details on what most would consider a pretty important feature. The fact that the Mini 9 already includes an integrated 3G card. According to Dell spokeswoman Anne Camdenm “there’s a hidden bonus, however: an integrated 3G card.” Of course the first reaction is nothing more than, Very Cool! However you cannot help but wonder if that “hidden bonus” added any additional cost that may go unused by lots of buyers. Could Dell have shaved a few extra bucks off the pricing? Maybe, maybe not.

Anyway, as of now, Dell has not announced (other than Vodafone) which wireless carriers would be picking up the device. This could mean for some slow initial sales here in the US. Personally I was planning to purchase the Mini 9 for myself, but I may wait for some carrier announcements with the hope of seeing a subsidized version become available.

Based on statements from John Thode, vice president and general manager of Dell’s small-screen devices “the names of Dell’s telecom partner or partners were cut before the announcement.” Thode did go on to mention that they will “sell it with telco operator channels, so [customers] won’t have to make a decision about which operator to support.”

Aside from a little waiting for any carrier announcement here in the US, the other major concern would be the battery life. The Inspiron Mini 9 features a 4-cell battery which should give about 3 hours of life under the best conditions, however with the active 3G connection that is sure to drop quickly. Mobile road warriors may want to begin thinking about a mobile charging solution or possibly a spare battery or two.
