Not content with simply destroying our laptops and cellphones, those evil little lithium ion packs have just escalated the human-battery conflict once again by sacrificing many of their number to lay waste to an entire building. Actually, it’s not clear what started the fire at Matsushita’s Li-ion plant in western Japan on September 30th, although we suspect a cadre of malcontents decided to self-detonate after taking a cue from their comrades at Sony. What is clear is that an unnamed Pentax digital camera — probably one of the recently-announced Optios – will be delayed because of the fire, with its launch being pushed from next month to February of next year. Hitting us in the gadget, right where it hurts: smart move, clever foes, smart move.

We don’t foresee too many tears being shed over this news, but the Hasselblad faithful will probably want to know that the tried and true H2 product line has been nixed. Not surprisingly, the company reported that “demand simply no longer justified the dedicated manufacturing line required for its production,” and that it would be shifting those resources to the H3DII. On a more positive note, the outfit is introducing the H2F, which is being billed as a “greatly simplified film-only version of the H2,” so those (still) sticking with film can look here to get their fix. Lastly, the firm reassured H1 / H2 owners that it would continue to support those products “for a minimum of 10 years from the date of purchase.” So long, H2, it’s been a good run.

Pentax didn’t do anything too drastic when it revved the already well-received K100D to “Super” status: apart from a dust-removal system, SDM lens support, ISO 3200 mode, and a much lower price, the Super is pretty much the same as the non-Super K100D it replaced. That’s apparently just fine, according to the crew over at Photography blog, who recently took the 6.1 megapixel Super for a spin and gave it five out of five stars — they found that the dust-removal and anti-shake systems, combined with the 11-point autofocus, made for terrific pictures at the Super’s $600 price point, with user-friendly features like dual LCD displays and SD card support just sweetening the pot. In fact, the only flaw PB found with the Super was that power options are limited to four AAs or two CR-V3 rechargeables — which some might find annoying, but definitely manageable.

Is it a phone, or is it a camera? Until recently, cameraphones were unquestionably still just phones with chintzy cams tacked on, but it looks like we’re finally getting to the point where the lines are truly blurred. Samsung’s new G800 slider is now official, packing a 5 megapixel autofocus camera in a rather attractive metallic form; that in itself isn’t terribly notable, considering we already have a handful of 5 megapixel handsets on the market. What is notable, though, is the added bonus of a xenon flash and 3x optical (yes, optical) zoom. Heck, from the back, you can barely tell it’s a phone at all. Add in the usual goodies like Bluetooth, HSDPA, and a generously sized QVGA display, and Samsung has a winner on its hands — or at least it would have a winner if only it’d launch stateside. Our far luckier European brethren, meanwhile, can lay their hands on this sucker starting in November for a to-be-determined price.

Steve’s Digicams has a review up of Casio’s Exilim V8, a slim 8.1 megapixel point-and-shoot featuring a 7x optical zoom, and a YouTube optimized H.264 video output. Key points of the review highlight the large 2.5-inch LCD on the back, decent movie recording quality — it goes up to 848×480 at 30fps — and some excellent camera shake / blur technologies, all crammed into an ultra compact case. On top of that it shoots some good photos, and has a relatively decent response time: in fact the only niggle Steve found was the fiddly controls. At only $299, sounds like a steal.

If you’re spinnin’ your wheels trying to figure out exactly who cenOmax is, simmer down — it’s only a new spinoff of Lite-On, okay? Now that we’ve handled that, the firm’s first foray into the digital photo frame arena is the seven-inch F7012A, which sports a 480 x 234 resolution panel, 400:1 contrast ratio, a USB port and a multicard reader capable of handling 15 different formats. Furthermore, this one supports MP3 playback through its built-in speakers, allows for automatic slideshows and also includes an integrated alarm / calendar. For Halloween (er, right?), the frame comes bundled with black (shown after the break) and orange clip-on frames, but users can theme it up however they like for a variety of occasions. As of now, this one’s available only in Europe for £48 ($98), but we’ve got enough alternatives here in the US to keep our hearts from breaking.

It’s taken nearly a full year, but Eye-Fi has finally gotten around to doubling the capacity of its multifaceted SD card. The Eye-Fi-2GB provides the same WiFi-enabling capabilities to any SD-ready digital camera, but this one looks to pack 2GB of capacity to handle even more snaps. From what we can tell by peeking the (apparently scanned in) user’s manual, the card will be compatible with both Macs and PCs, but of course, we’ve no idea how much this thing will cost you when it finally hits shelves. Rest assured, we’ll be finding out soon enough.

Google-mania has gripped us as of late. Whether it is hardware or software is still a mystery. The WSJ says we’ll know Monday, for sure. OK, but I’ve heard that before. Here is why, for me at least, the prospect of Google brining something new to the table is going to matter:

Sling Media is possibly looking to send you advertisements via their SlingPlayer. This is being based on information included in a Sling Media patent, which means it may or may not actually happen.
This patent would make is possible for Sling Media to send ads to the user’s computer and display ads in front or behind the media stream, place and ad at the end of the stream or even overlay the active stream with an ad. They can also use a phone call, fax or the postal service to reach the user. The ads could be very specific to the current content such as while “watching their favorite player at bat during a baseball game on the personal computer, they also receive an advertisement for the relevant sports memorabilia as well as a link to a web page where the user can easily buy the advertised product.”
While the technology behind this patent is very cool, I am sure there would be many Sling users that would become very upset should this system go live. Thankfully Sling Media has not yet announced any plans to actually begin sending you ads and hopefully it will remain that way.
