Pentax sure does seem to like trotting its digital cameras out in pairs, and it’s done just that again today, with the company now introducing its new Optio A40 and Optio V10 models. On the higher-end of the lot, the Optio A40 (pictured above) boasts a mighty 12 megapixels, along with a 3x optical zoom, a 2.5-inch LCD, a range of shake-reducing measures, and face-recognition, among other features. The V10, on the other hand, scales things back to just 8 megapixels, with a slightly larger 3-inch LCD, and that same 3x optical zoom in an even slimmer 19 mm thick body (check it out after the break). Look for the A40 to roll out first sometime this month for $300, with the V10 set to follow in November for $250. If that’s all a little too low end for you, you can also look forward to Pentax’s just-announced DA 18-250mm F3.5-6.3ED AL [IF] high-performance zoom lens, which is designed specifically for its DSLR cameras, and boasts an approximate zoom ratio of 14x, among other top end specs. Look for it to land later this month for just under $500.

You’ve had a moment to ponder over that SD870 purchase, so how’s about yet another option, cool? On the docket today is Canon’s SD950 IS (IXUS 960 IS elsewhere in the world), which packs an awful lot of megapixels into a pocket-friendly shell. As expected from Canon’s SD lineup, this one fared pretty well throughout, garnering praise for its sleek design, superb image quality, effective optical image stabilization / face detection and sturdy feel. The only real knocks came from the less-than-perfect noise performance, slower than expected startup / image capture and the admittedly lofty pricetag. Granted, this one should be close to ideal for poster printers needing a camera minuscule enough to reside in a rear pocket, but for the rest of us, one of Canon’s “lower” models should fit the bill (and our budgets) a bit better.

BenQ has been firing on all cylinders lately, dropping more projectors, cameras, and Intel-based MIDs then you can shake a stick at (trust us, we’ve tried to shake a variety of sticks at them). Joining the fold today is the DC-X735 compact digital camera, a sleek little shooter which looks conspicuously similar to the company’s recently release T800. Regardless, the 7.2-megapixel camera does it up with a 2.5-inch LCD display, 3 x zoom (4 x on the digital side), ISO to 6400 (in Movie Mode), MPEG4 video recording, and an SDHC slot for up to 4GBs of storage. The camera comes in “Vixen-red” or “Midnight-black” paint jobs, so you can match it to your handbag (provided your color schemes are based on The Masquerade), and will be available this month for an indeterminate amount of cold, hard cash.

Texting

Students at John’s University in New York recently saw just how well a text message alert system would work. A man had walked onto the campus with a loaded rifle and students were warned just 16 minutes after he arrived. In this case the message actually arrived just after the gunman was caught, however the message would still serve a great purpose. Word of mouth travels fast and a message (even after the capture) would still be beneficial in keeping people informed and help stop the rumors.

“Without the university’s effective planning and its community’s cooperation, this situation could have concluded quite differently,” said New York Governor Eliot Spitzer.

Students must have also found that the SMS alert message system was beneficial because the number of students enrolled went from 2,100 to 6,500 after this incident. While John’s University was a real world situation Purdue University has also recently tested an SMS alert system with over 7,200 recipients.

nokia unlocked campaign

Nokia has not been shy lately about taking shots at Apple regarding the locked down iPhone. A recent ad campaign from Nokia “Open to anything” is the latest.

We believe the best devices have no limits. That’s why we’ve left the Nokia Nseries open. Open to applications. Open to widgets. Open to anything. So go ahead and load it up. What it does is up to you.

Nokia has also been using poster style ads; the above image was spotted recently in NYC on 2nd Avenue.

RAZR 2 and Mercedes

A giant RAZR 2 crashes into a Mercedes and totals it. Is this how the RAZR team wanted the RAZR 2 to be marketed in Russia? Who knows. Thank god no one was inside at the time. More pictures after the jump.

Dell Green

As many companies are finally realizing the danger of pollution to the environment, Dell plans to follow suit and produce more green products by 2008. Mr. Dell, CEO of Dell, had this to say:

“There’s been a time in history of business where it’s more important for organizations of all sizes to partner together to positively impact the Earth that we all share… It’s not enough for Dell to be an environmental leader. We also need to partner with our customers … to dramatically improve our own customers’ environmental impacts.”

Dell plans to work on creating more energy efficient and environmentally friendly computers and other electronics. Hopefully with Dell starting to do this, more and more companies will follow and help fight pollution.

Blog Tang A+

Blog? Is that what the title says? Yes, it is called Blog Tang, but no, it doesn’t blog. However, it still does a lot of other stuff and right now, it’s looking pretty good.

It features HD video playback at 30fps, either at the 40GB, 80GB model, 120GB, or the 160GB model. It comes with a GPS-sized screen of 4.3 inches which boasts 16 million colors. Usually, PMP screens aren’t this big. It supports a variety of formats for video including MP4, AVI, VOB, and DAT. For audio it plays MP3, WMA and OGG. Also for photos, JPEG, BMP and TXT.

Additionally, it sports line-in recording, TV out, and USB 2.0 connectivity. It will probably hit China first, but hopefully it will come Stateside because it really is a good player. Pricing is as follows: 40GB for $173, 80GB for $213, 120GB for $253 and 160GB for $293.

TuneSquare

Since the “uprising” of free music sites such as Spiral frog, many have tried to emulate the same service. Tunesquare changes the sales model a little bit, making the artist involved in earnings a little more. Artists who sign up for Tunesquare can put their music up on the site, and while music is free, advertisements add money to the artists’ PayPal account.

Now onto the service itself.

After you search and find the song(s) you want, you can play them. However, a video ad will run while you are listening to the song; therein lies the advertising revenue. If you enjoy the song, you can download it for free.
There is a problem with the service, as Brad over at the DownloadSquad puts it:

TuneSquare primarily features music from artists you’ve never heard of. And that means the site won’t likely get a ton of traffic, which means it won’t be able to charge much for advertising — which means that most of the artists who sign up for the site will be musicians you’ve never heard of.

Nonetheless, the service seems good, and I’d hope to see it thrive.

Oh, one more thing; there’s no DRM in the tracks.
